Air Diaphragm Pump
Air-Operated Double-Diaphragm Pumps (AODD) or simply Air-Operated Diaphragm Pumps (AOD) are a type of Positive Displacement pumps. They are widely used in many industries from wastewater treatment to manufacturing sectors. One reason why they are so prominent is because of the many advantages they offer that the other pump types cannot deliver.
The best selling point of an AODD pump is its simple design. It doesn’t need sophisticated controllers and cleaning is easy. In fact, it can go through a CIP process where it can be sanitized without disassembly. Another outstanding feature of an AODD pump is its efficient handling of solids without damaging or compromising the quality of the product.
OPERATING PRINCIPLES OF AN AIR DIAPHRAGM PUMP
Pneumatic Pump
AODD pumps don’t need electricity to operate, rather uses compressed air as its power source. The left and right diaphragms are connected by a single so that they can move in unison. As compressed air moves the air valve, one diaphragm is pushed towards the outer wall of the pump while the other is pulled towards the inner side of the pump.
To elaborate, as the shaft pushes the right diaphragm, the left diaphragm is placed in its suction stroke, causing a fixed volume of fluid to enter the pump through the common inlet. The shaft then moves to the left, now pushing the left diaphragm. The right diaphragm is now placed in its suction stroke, while the left diaphragm is placed in its discharge stroke. This cycle continues as long as the pump is supplied with compressed air.
